The Womb Cinema
DESIGN AND CREATION BY VICTORIA MAYTOM
IN COLLABORATION WITH ABI TURNER AND CHERRY CHAN
We aim to continue the Womb’s journey so would love to work with other collaborators. We would love to continue to use the womb’s unique space to show educational, socio-political and feminist work.
The Womb Cinema started as a lighting design module and morphed into an immersive cinema. Every year at Rose Bruford’s Symposium festival there is plethora of shows, installations, exhibits, performance art and we just felt there needed to be a space which was comfortable, chilled out and yet also made you think. We created a womb like tent, suspended in the trees, enveloping and calm. With a screen above your head you are invited to lay down, relax and return to the reflection of the womb.
The Womb was also a place to celebrate female filmmakers, and social issues. When we are at our most comfortable we are willing to speak about topics we don’t always address and the womb provides a space where we can reflect on this.
